Where did the warmth go?

I’m not an interior designer, but I know what a home should feel like. And I know what it shouldn’t feel like, my grandad’s dental clinic back in the 80s.

That’s what most modern houses remind me of now. All white everything. Glossy kitchens. White walls. Basic furniture. Add some grey wood floors and maybe a chrome tap or two, and you’ve got the same copy-and-paste design I’ve seen a hundred times.

The Modern Copy and Paste Design

Walk into any new build or renovated house and it’s the same vibe. Cold. Bright. Empty.
Even places that cost a fortune feel like they were designed to be shown, not lived in. Everything looks like it came straight from a catalogue, right down to the identical grey sofa and fake eucalyptus in a vase.

It might be “modern,” but it’s also soulless.

What Happened to Homes with Character?

I miss homes that felt warm. Where the walls weren’t afraid of colour. Where the furniture wasn’t all the same shape and tone. Where there was texture, depth, and actual life happening.

The kind of homes you’d find in the early 2000s, Tuscan-style tiles, soft lighting, rich colours, and heavy wooden furniture that didn’t wobble if you leaned on it. They weren’t perfect, but they felt like someone actually lived there.

It’s Not About Money

This isn’t about high-end design or spending more. It’s about comfort.
A room with a bit of personality says more than the brightest white kitchen ever could. Throw in a lamp with warm light, a worn leather chair, or even just some actual books and you’re already ahead.

Even a small flat can feel like home if it reflects who you are, not just what’s trending on instagram…

Let’s Bring Back the Warmth

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately, and maybe you have too.
Style isn’t just about what we wear, it’s also the spaces we live in. A house should be more than a photoshoot backdrop. It should feel like a place you want to stay in.

Let me know if you feel the same. What’s one thing in your space that brings comfort or warmth?

Let’s stop living in dental clinics and start making homes feel human again.
